What to do when the world is crappy and getting you down? Pour yourself a cup of tea and break out the fanfic! I've read some truly amazing stories recently, and there have been so many great female-centric stories. I read a lot of slash, but recently I've really been craving female main characters. Here are a few incredible fics that I rec with a crazy amount of fangirl glee. Go, read, enjoy, and remember just how fucking amazing women are. (A lot of these have been recced recently at [livejournal.com profile] crack_broom or other comms, but I know that not everyone has seen these, so ...)

HARRY POTTER:

Five Stories About Gwenog Jones by [livejournal.com profile] snegurochka_lee (PG-13, Gwenog Jones) Gwenog Jones is a Beater, a woman, a Slytherin, and she loves to fly – not necessarily in that order. She's not afraid of very much in this world, because she's never found very much to be afraid of. And yeah, for the record, she could kick your arse. There is nothing about this fic that I didn't love. She's amazing, stubborn, as un-public-relations-friendly as can possibly be, and she's gonna fly ... no matter if there's a war going down, no matter if they say she can't, no matter what. There needs to be more Gwenog fic.

And For Some, Life is Only Ordinary (or, why Petunia chose Vernon) by [livejournal.com profile] luvscharlie (R) (Petunia-centric, contains James/Lily, Sirius/Petunia, and Vernon/Petunia) This story stole my soul and broke my heart into a million pieces. I ached for Petunia, who explains with perfect clarity how it feels to be the plain sister, always dull and overlooked next to beautiful, shining, brilliant, fiery Lily, without ever becoming overly maudlin or self-pitying. It's the matter-of-factness that kills me. Petunia is a character who gets written off so easily and turned into a one-dimensional villain so often. It's understandable, considering what JKR gives us about her, but there has to be more to her. And the little hints that JKR did give us, how Petunia longed to be like Lily-- special, pretty, loved... this Petunia is how I will ALWAYS think of her now. I want to cuddle her and tell her that she is beautiful and special and wonderful and loved. And my heart will ache forever for this character and for every girl and every woman who feels like this. Please read this. It's heartbreaking and beautiful and one of my favorite character pieces I've ever read. i love when authors can take unlikable characters and completely change all my preconceptions about them.

Oral History by [livejournal.com profile] acadine (PG, Padma Patil, could be read as Padma/Cho if you squint a lot) This fic is super old-- like from back when HP fanfic was just emerging. I only just discovered it. Padma is so wonderfully and perfectly Ravenclaw and she grows frustrated with the curriculum at Hogwarts being so white-male-Euro-centric and takes it upon herself to learn about what they aren't teaching her. It's lovely, well-written, insightful, and brings up a lot of great points. And though it's short, there's a lot to it. Definitely worth a read.

Ex Libris by [livejournal.com profile] ldymusyc (G, Irma Pince) One possible explanation, via the Trousers of Time, I assume, for what might have happened to the books at Hogwarts during the year of the Carrows. This is a teeny little fic that is gorgeously written and captures Madam Pince, the librarian of Hogwarts, so perfectly. Even if you have no interest in her whatsoever, take a moment and read this. It's 550 words and every word is beautifully chosen and it's such a fantastic premise. It's a bit of a crossover of sorts, but I'm not at all familiar with the other 'verse and that didn't detract from this fic in the least. Read this: for the under-appreciated Madam Pince, for the gorgeous language, for the brilliant storyline, for the beautiful world-building. Worth every word. Go, go, go!

Margarita: A Story by [livejournal.com profile] inkvoices (PG-13, Rita Skeeter) The story of Rita Skeeter-- where she starts and how she ends up who she is. Delightful-- especially the ending. Again, I love when authors make me like characters that are rather unlikable in canon. Yes, please!

STAR TREK:

More Important Than the Stars by [livejournal.com profile] igrockspock (PG, Joanna McCoy) Dreading her mother's second marriage, a young Joanna hatches a secret plot to visit her father on the Enterprise. Teenage Joanna is so likable here, which is lovely. She's bright and self-assured and sweetly naive and genuinely enjoyable. I love the stories about her life growing up with her mom and their whimsical girls-only lifestyle and how she reacts to Jocelyn remarrying and the changes it brings. The details about her relationship with her father and the world of the family of Starfleet members are beautifully constructed and kinda broke my heart. Sweet and fun and touching.

Tiny Pushes by [livejournal.com profile] velvetmouse (PG-13, Janice Rand) Being a yeoman often means an awful lot of work without very much respect or appreciation. But sometimes, just sometimes, people surprise you. Five notable events in the life of Janice Rand. I love this look into Janice and the life of a yeoman. Brilliant, inspiring, and made me grin. It's great to see people appreciate the people in the background who make everything happen. Yes, please! Damn, I love Janice.

Oh my goodness, you guys! [livejournal.com profile] vanseedee wrote me the most amazingly glorious piece of Christmas fiction EVER! It's wonderful, it's heartwarming, it's full of Christmas cheer, it's sad at moments, funny in parts, and just fantastic throughout. It tells the story of Lee's Christmases with the Weasleys over the years. It's amazing and you should all go read it right this second and revel in its brilliance and also in the wonderful Christmas cheer it will inspire! It's George/Lee, which I love, but try it even if you're not huge on the pairing, because it's so much more than that.

A Weasley Tradition

Go, go NOW! Oh my goodness, I'm so happy! I'm sitting on a plane (yay! free Christmas wifi!) and grinning ear to ear. :D :D :D

[livejournal.com profile] vanseedee is my hero today. *glomps*

dudley redeemed banner
(Dudley/Piers but the story really focuses on Dudley and his desire to make things right with Harry and how he gets that chance that he never thought he'd get. PG. My first time trying 2nd person pov and I think it went rather well! /self-pimp)

Some amazing Dudley recs from the fest so far )
katmarajade: reading (chekov/sulu)
I haven't been as good about reading all the Chekov/Sulu goodness out there these days, but today I got a huge craving for it!  Luckily there were a couple amazing fics that were recently posted that I could dive into and omgsodamngood!!!!

Let Fortune Turn Her Wheel by [livejournal.com profile] mercaque (R, character death) Featuring a time traveling Sulu, a embittered 73-year-old Professor Chekov, angst, an amazing lovestory that gets told in pieces, and a wonderful sense of sweetness and resolution. Not necessarily a happy ending, but a perfect one, really.

The Path of a Moving Object by [livejournal.com profile] hollycomb (R) Chekov works at the coffee shop where Hikaru comes every morning, there is much UST, sweetness, courting, socially-inept and awkward Chekov, and adorably dorky Hikaru, a sad last night, a long separation, angst, and a satisfying reunion. Good, good stuff.

And then, because I still hadn't fully satisfied my Chekov/Sulu craving and was dying for more of their adorableness, I went back to some of my all-time favs. These stories NEVER EVER EVER fail to put an enormous smile on my face. Three of my absolute favorite feel-good Chekov/Sulu pieces:

Cherry Coke by [livejournal.com profile] grea (PG-13) HSAU and the cutest damn thing EVER. Chekov is on a band trip and runs into Hikaru who works at the hotel. Bonus of lots of Enterprise crew cameos. Super cute and as sweet as cherry coke.

Math and Boys by [livejournal.com profile] 6street (PG) Academy fic where Chekov and Gaila are best friends and she helps him with his ADORABLE crush on Hikaru. Pavel and Hikaru's interactions are unbelievably adorable and make me AWWWWW outloud every single time.

Bring Back My Bonny To Me by [livejournal.com profile] secret_weapon(PG-13, also featuring Kirk/McCoy) This is one of my favorite fanfics of all time and I tend to go back and reread it whenever I need a pick-me-up. Laugh out loud hilarious and so super sweet with loads of UST and best friends pining over each other and drunken confessions and botched matchmaking and spot-on dialogue and there is a scene in the mess hall between Chekov and Kirk that is THE BEST THING EVER. I want it in movie form. Seriously. So much love for this fic.
katmarajade: reading (willow/tara)
It's here!  International Day of Femslash!  And I have not finished my fic... *headdesk x infinity* The story I was working on for this has gotten a bit more out of control than I'd thought and I can't bear to cut it down when I love the characters so much. I was totally panicking that I hadn't finished it and almost in tears when I finally had to STOP and tell myself that it's just a day and it's just fanfic and it's not the end of the world as we know it if the story doesn't get posted today.  Yes, it's disappointing and I feel like a bit of a failure, but que sera sera, am I right?

Here's an excerpt from the story though, so I'm not a total failure!  It's just a rough draft and unbetaed so bear with me (girl!Sulu/girl!Chekov, this excerpt is totally G-rated)

Her eyes raked up and down Hikaru's drenched figure, taking in the melted make up, the black leather jacket and big boots, and the water-stained lavender dress hanging limply around her knobby knees and skinny legs. Hikaru suddenly found herself feeling terribly self-conscious. )

ALSO FEMSLASH FIC RECS! YAY!

STAR TREK XI RECS
Staring at the Rude Girls by [livejournal.com profile] paytofay (Girl!Sulu/Girl!Chekov, NC-17)

Yes, yes I have recced this before, but I'm reccing it again because I love love love it and it was written for ME! *twirls* It's hot, sweet, and wonderful. Chekova is cute and sassy. Hikaru punches a guy and works in a motorcycle shop and never wears a bra. Jamie Kirk cameos in a grrrl!band. There is no bad here.

Dancing About Architecture by [livejournal.com profile] _beetle_ (Girl!Sulu/Girl!Chekov, Girl!Sulu/Girl!Kirk, other het and slash pairings, NC-17)

This is the fic that converted me to genderbent Sulu/Chekov. It's amazing! Lots of love and triangles and unrequited or seemingly unrequited pining and hot sex and strong women and powerful relationships and emotionally charged twists and turns. It has definitely not gotten as much love as it so richly deserves so please check it out and tell her how fantastic this is!

Find the Words by [livejournal.com profile] ms_chak (Gaila/Uhura, Spock/Uhura, NC-17, mentions of slavery)

She just polished this up and reposted it for today! YAY! It's so heart-wrenching and lovely. I fell in love with Gaila in this and Uhura is so wonderfully characterized. Such a beautiful emotional punch. Uhura's confusion about their relationship is so understandable and the post-Farragut reaction totally made me go all wibbly and shiny-eyed.

HARRY POTTER RECS
A Pair of Dull Scissors in the Yellow Light by [livejournal.com profile] lily_pearl (Millicent Bulstrode/Susan Bones, PG)

This fic broke my heart. It's loosely based on the story of Samson and Delilah and I don't want to give anything away, but even if you're not a huge Millicent fan, your heart will ache for her in this. Beautifully written and made me sob.

Ta-Da! by [livejournal.com profile] briony_tallis (Katie/Alicia, PG-13)

So sweet! So funny! Alicia has gone off to play pro Quidditch and comes back to town for a girls' night out with Katie and Angelina. Alicia is wonderfully energetic and trying to show off and Katie is adorably clueless and Angelina is hilarious. Also, a lovely George cameo. This fic was my favorite piece at this year's [livejournal.com profile] femmefest I do love Katie!

Enjoy!  And leave some love for the fabulous authors if you do.  And Happy International Day of Femslash to all!  \o/ girl-love FTW!
katmarajade: reading (kaylee)
Oh my word!  [info]paytofay wrote me Sulu/Chekov femslash!  *FLAILS!*

We'd talked about her writing this (It's genderbent S/C in a sort of HSAU [of which she is the queen] and it is glorious.)and I've been constantly bugging her encouraging and cheerleading her about this story and posting it now instead of waiting until International Day of Femslash in July, which was what originally sparked this.    And then she posted it-- and it's for me!  *flails more*  Because I've had a kinda crappy week and this was the best surprise gift of all time!  She is the most amazing person on the planet!  You should all love and worship her as much as I do.

Seriously, what are you waiting for?  It's got gorgeous, smart, sassy girls; a first date at a diner; Hikaru punching a guy; super hot kisses and girl on girl action; a butch/femme vibe (which is a huge kink of mine); and Jamie Kirk cameos in a girl power band... um, could you possibly ask for anything more?

ETA: And just when I thought my day could not get any better, [livejournal.com profile] paytofay posts the next installment of her Cupcake/Chekov saga, based on request/prompts/long comment thread rambling from me and [livejournal.com profile] secretsolitaire It's their first fight-- Pavel's proud and ridiculous and 18. Cupcake is just lost and confused. Sulu is the most amazing best friend ever. Kirk is Kirk and just fabulous. It should not be missed.

Oh my goodness, I love you guys so much! These fics have made me so fucking happy-- I want to cry! This is like the best day ever. *sobs and clings to [livejournal.com profile] paytofay and [livejournal.com profile] mcstories *

Here are some recs for some awesome rare pairs that I've read recently and absolutely loved.  One of my favorite aspects of fandom is when a minor character from canon is really brought to life in a story, developed and drawing on pieces of canon to make something new and exciting.

Star Trek Recs )

Harry Potter Recs )

If you've got a particularly amazing rare pair rec, let me know! I'd love to hear yours. Also, if you know of good Millicent recs (het or femmeslash) please share! And if you enjoy these fics, please leave some love for the authors-- it's always very appreciated.

If you like rare pairs [livejournal.com profile] hp_rarities and [livejournal.com profile] hp_beholder have some great stories in their archives and both will start posting for their latest fests very soon here, so keep an eye out for rare pair goodness!

ALSO, does anyone else kinda love Dudley and want to read about him growing up to be awesome? Because I'm really excited about this new comm! [livejournal.com profile] dudley_redeemed Seriously. So excited. Looks like lots of awesome writers are already looking to join in for a slash/het/gen fest full of Dudley-love. It's going to be great.

It's April Fools' Day and the birthday of the incomparable Fred and George Weasley.  Since I am absolute pants at practical jokes or creating candy or fireworks of any kind, I offer up FIC RECS featuring one or both of these amazing boys.  Just a warning that some of these will be post-DH and therefore very obviously missing Fred.

GEN )

HET )

SLASH )

Also, [livejournal.com profile] hpgeorgecentric started posting today. The first story posted was brilliant G/Lee fantastic-ness with not dead!Fred and angst and UST and drunken confessions! I highly suggest you read that too and keep an eye on this comm, which should be posting one George fic a day for the next 3 1/2 weeks or so-- it's looking to be pretty amazing! *SQUEE*

Also, if you have any recs featuring the twins, I'd love to hear them! :D I'm trying desperately to get into George's head for the [livejournal.com profile] slashfest piece I'm working on, and he's being annoyingly elusive!
