alostcorner , who is also having a rough time of it. I hope things shape up soon, bb! Here is GinnyLuna on a road trip for you. Thanks to
aigooism for reading this through and picking out my (rather many) typos. Idea totally snagged from a poster in a LaQuinta hotel elevator.
In hindsight, it had probably been a rather bad idea. Neither Ginny nor Luna knew how to drive a car, after all. Through a bit of sneakiness, a lot of ingenuity, a good deal of magic, and the power of Luna's optimism and Ginny's determination, they had managed to power up the great clunker of an automobile that Mr. Weasley had been tinkering with for the last few years.
It was blue, or had been at some point before it rusted over, and, despite its rather homely exterior, Ginny thought that driving it around would be an absolute delight. So when Luna mentioned wanting to go to Scarborough, because everyone knew that there was a bit of magic near the seashore and some of the most powerful herbs and potions ingredients in the world could be purchased from a wizened old witch who lived along the shore, Ginny (though she'd never heard of this before) immediately decided that she could use some extra herbs. Who knew when she might take up brewing potions again, after all? It definitely wasn't only because she'd been wanting to take the car out for a lovely drive through the country.
Luna was always up for anything, and she was never all that concerned about when or how she got anywhere, as long as she got there. Ginny wasn't given to distraction the way Luna was, but she was stubborn as a Crup with a bone when she decided she wanted to do something. So they decided to go on a road trip, in Ginny's father's old, not-quite-functioning car, to a town more than 350 miles away.
Ginny hadn't counted on it being as difficult as it was. 350 miles was quite far, especially when one was not traveling by magic. And, despite her bravado and enthusiasm, she didn't actually know how to drive. It turned out that it was a bit more complicated than one initially would think. Also, the signs were all in some fancy driving language that she did not know and she thought she might need a guidebook to explain all the different symbols. She also had thought that finding a place would be a bit easier. After all, shouldn't there be a "Scarborough This Way" sign somewhere along the way?
Three hours of driving in circles and not getting anywhere near London, much less North Yorkshire, and Ginny and Luna found themselves sputtering to a stop on a lumpy road in the middle of nowhere. Ginny got out of the car and waved her wand decisively at front end. "Reparo!"
Suddenly the bonnet shot open and flames leapt out, and Ginny found herself with soot on her face and tears wobbling in her eyes. Where had she gone wrong?
She jumped as Luna placed a warm hand on her shoulder. Ginny looked at her friend guiltily, knowing that she'd been the one to talk Luna into this in the first place. Luna didn't appear distressed in the least, though a few strands of her long, wild, constantly disheveled blond hair looked as if they were smoking a bit at the tip. She held up a long curved stick she'd grabbed from the side of the road and a bag of marshmallows.
"Shall we?"
Ginny choked out a laugh and threw her arms around Luna, who just smiled and patted Ginny's back in a very comforting matter, all while mumbling something about blibbering humdingers being attracted to fire. They probably would never make it to Scarborough, but maybe the road trip wasn't such a bad idea after all.
